There isn’t the precise dismemberment system found in the original Dead Island in this iteration, but you will see a lot more zombies on screen at once. In fact, Yager claims there will be more than 50 at once at some points, thanks to the power of the Unreal 4 engine. In Dead Island 2 the world of Hell-A including its enemies and loot adjusts to your character's level. While you may come across a weapon that surpasses your current rating the enemies you face and the weapons you find will be at the same level as you unless you are under-leveled for the mission. This means that grinding to level up is unnecessary as the game will level up with you. Simply play the game complete all story and side missions and you won't find yourself underpowered. PS5, Series X and Series S also get improvements to shadow quality and effects work, plus environmental animations for trees - where the last-gen versions present them as static objects. However, all consoles use cube-mapping in places where SSR isn't applied, and the result is low resolution, static textures in some areas - which look particularly out of place on PS5 and Series X. Still, the shadow, effects and animation upgrades are neat extras even if they don't significantly change the look of the game, while the move to 60fps being much more impactful. Side-by-side, there are a few setting tweaks in terms of shadows and vegetation to separate last-gen and current-gen machines - but the game's visual makeup remains intact everywhere else. Interestingly Xbox Series S uses equivalent to the last-gen shadow setting, while Series X takes a step up in quality, but remains a preset below PS5's.
