About this deal

Knowledge of the formulae for the sum of arithmetic and geometric progressions to n (or infinite) terms. The additional test will be optional; candidates are not required to take it if they are happy with how the MAT went for them on 19 October. For candidates who suffered disruption and wish to take the additional test, that test will supplement the information we already have. What does this mean? This is essentially another way of say that the PAT has a heavy focus on application rather than base knowledge. Without practicing questions and past papers (and leaving time to review and learn from the questions you got wrong!) – the knowledge about a topic will only go so far. Disclaimer: We are aware of changes in the specification but have left some of the concepts in, as familiarity often helps to eradicate some extent of the uncertainty in problem solving questions which don't require knowledge of the particular topic but does make the endeavour to solve the problem easier. I think ‘yes’ to both. (Covered by “Understanding circuit diagrams including batteries, wires, resistors, filament lamps, diodes, capacitors, light dependent resistors and thermistors.”).

Authorised schools, colleges and other test centres will be able to register candidates for Oxford’s admissions tests anytime between 1 September and 29 September. The good thing about inequalities is that by the time you’ve made it to the PAT you’ve finally escaped from ‘draw the following inequality on a number line’ questions! You do need to be able to solve inequalities though, including ones which contain quadratics. The PAT is designed for candidates who have studied the first year of A-level (or equivalent) Maths and Physics, and covers similar material to that of the GCSE and A-level syllabus.

Know what is meant by the phrases ‘phases of the moon’ and ‘eclipses’ and how the position of the observer on the Earth affects their view of these events. Try doing some questions under timed conditions. One of the things which students who have taken the test say is hard is the number of questions you need to do in only 2 hours. Practising some questions under timed conditions near the date of the exam will mean you are more likely to get to the end of the paper. These reports provide summaries of theadmissions process for the subjects of Mathematics, Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematicsand Philosophy and Mathematics and Computer Science:It is not possible to re-sit a test. If you feel you did badly due to extenuating circumstances, for example: if you were ill on the day of the test, your test centre can submit a special considerations form for you; or if there was some form of disruption at the test centre you can submit the form yourself. Application forms must be received within 5 days of the test date. Watch the Mathematics department's MAT livestream. This year's livestream runs from early August until November, but you can also access recordings of previous events. Which questions you answer in the test depends on the course you are applying for. Details of precisely which questions you should attempt are given below. (Don't worry, you can also find these details in the instructions throughout the test.)
