About this deal

The English has been received well. Ahead of the series premiere in the UK, the show had a 79% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a score which has jumped up to 83% since the show's debut (as of the time of our last update). Most outlets were particularly impressed with the cast's performances and beautifully shot scenery. However, when they form this unlikely alliance – and no doubt will set off an adeventures that will last 13 years until the programme meets the point where it starts, in future episodes – it still comes across as a complete waste of everyone’s time. In 1890, a US army patrol in the newly formed Oklahoma territory kills Running Hawk, a wanted Cheyenne chief. Sergeant Eli Whipp, a Pawnee scout, stops them from killing Running Hawk's family, and retires to claim land in Nebraska he is owed for his military service, despite warnings that he will now be viewed as "one of them". But there is great peace for her in it because what she has been able to experience. And in experiencing great love and being able to let go [of that love] has its own moment of dignity for her — to be able to let go and let [Eli] be free of whatever decay is going to happen to her."

There was a good line from Eli, where Cornelia was about to take flight with him, but couldn’t take everything she needed, so he replies, “The difference between what you need and what you want, is what you can put on a horse”. [9] Reception [ edit ] He told HeyUGuysthat he'd wanted to do a Western since he was a boy: "I was a young man in Montana, and got to see the last of the Wild West, both its benefits and its costs, and I always wanted to do a Western. It's quite technically demanding, so I'm glad I'm doing it now and not when I first started out."

More recently, the BBC gave us some more info about what the series will entail. According to their release, the series "takes the core themes of identity and revenge to tell a uniquely compelling parable on race, love and power" as Cornelia and Eli band together to cross the West.

Speaking to The Telegraph about her starring role, Blunt said: "I love a character with a secret. And I loved Cornelia's buoyancy, her hopefulness, her guilelessness. It's the worst thing ever when you open a script and read the words 'strong female lead'. That makes me roll my eyes – I’m already out. I’m bored. Those roles are written as incredibly stoic, you spend the whole time acting tough and saying tough things. After all, Blunt seems pretty happy with Lady Cornelia's ending, which means she probably wouldn't be up for returning.

Meanwhile, The A.V. Club said the show "has all the makings of a classic Western saga" and praised many elements including the performances, cinematography, and costumes, but were frustrated with the plot development, writing "there are hints of an in-depth, poignant tale hidden within The English, as Eli and Cornelia struggle with retaining parts of their identities after experiencing tragedy. But the show so explicitly wants to establish its Western atmosphere that the plot becomes an afterthought." The English leaves one in no doubt that America was founded and built upon blood and violence and life threatening struggle - and that 'the land of the free' is a sentiment that some citizens are probably yet to experience. Maybe in future episodes it improves, but only one was available initially, and it really does not inspire me to mosey on down this plain again. has been a treat full of some really good television shows and The English deserves to be right up there amongst those judged as the very best of the crop.

There is dignity in [this ending] for her," the actress told TVLine. "She has gone through a reclamation of identity. And there is something healing in that she met in Eli such a kind man, and a man who had such an impact on her life. She is someone who is big on destiny, and this happens to be her rather tragic destiny. On the other hand, The English is not sentimental. Its main characters endure their 'lot' with a resigned pragmatism and with little resentment - saving their revenge for those who truly deserve it, and otherwise only handing out justice when left with little other choice. If not, a thrilling, romantic, epic horse-opera is heading to your screen sometime next year, and I couldn’t be more excited.” What starts off as a bit on the dull side, sees The English descending into being very arty-farty with slow motion shots, lots of mumbling, and not a lot of a sense of direction for the plot. Plus, too much of this is in the dark, so you can barely see what’s going on.

In Hoxem, farmer Timothy Flynn shoots his wife and then himself. His fellow farmer and former army mate Billy Myers asks Sheriff Marshall if marks were found on the bodies, and Billy's wife Martha confronts Trafford for seizing her unbranded cattle. Learning that Melmont paid for the Flynns' coffins, Marshall discovers their bodies have been dug up, while the Myers' son Jed finds Billy disembowelled and hanged. Having said all of that, the story will be difficult for some people to stomach. It has found a poetics (which is heart wrenching) in its difficult subject matter and much of the violence occurs off-screen, but it is still covering matters that are uncomfortable and confronting to think about and witness.. On the other hand The English offers a realistic and pragmatic encounter with these harsh realities - realities that the native American Indian population are still struggling with to this day - a tragedy when one considers their deep wisdom and connection with the land. The stories also make it clear that for settlers in the new land the reality was also harsh and brutal - but it's much harder to find sympathy there. The BBC added: "Both of them have a clear sense of their destiny but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past. They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to their cores, physically and psychologically. But as each obstacle is overcome it draws them closer to their ultimate destination, the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming.Bad Sisters" and "Banshees" lead this year's IFTA nominations".
