Naphtha - Naphtha is ideal for thinning oil-based paints and sealants including enamel, varnish, and wood stains. However, it doesn't work well with water-based paints due to its petroleum-based origins. It has the added advantage of being fast drying and being less likely to cause separation in paints. It does however have the disadvantage of releasing toxic fumes, which can be a health hazard if inhaled. Some food items that have been found to contain trace amounts of xylenes and other aromatic hydrocarbons include:

Water - Yes water can be used as a paint thinner! However, water only works to thin latex, chalk, acrylic, and other water-based paints. Water should never be used to thin oil-based paints as it will ruin the paint. Xylenes form azeotropes with water and a variety of alcohols. The azeotrope with water consists of 60% xylenes and boils at 94.5°C. [3] As with many alkylbenzene compounds, xylenes form complexes with various halocarbons. [13] The complexes of different isomers often have dramatically different properties from each other. [14] Applications [ edit ] Terephthalic acid and related derivatives [ edit ] Where water based cleaners are not suitable such as electronic devices, IPA is an extremely effective cleaner. For cleaning and sanitising areas that many people touch, apply IPA on a clean cloth or low lint cotton wool, cotton buds are ideal for access small crevices. Some examples: Standard thinners – a mixture of recycled solvents used for cleaning spray guns and for thinning cellulose paint Xylene is used in the laboratory to make baths with dry ice to cool reaction vessels, [18] and as a solvent to remove synthetic immersion oil from the microscope objective in light microscopy. [19] In histology, xylene is the most widely used clearing agent. [20] Xylene is used to remove paraffin from dried microscope slides prior to staining. After staining, microscope slides are put in xylene prior to mounting with a coverslip.

One of the most important uses of xylene is in medicine, particularly in histology or the microscopic examination of tissues. Here, it is used in the staining process of tissues for microscopy. In a nutshell, histopathologists can examine tissues for tell-tale signs of any disease. Tissues are prepared using paraffin wax for cutting, and xylene is used because it’s highly miscible with paraffin, making the cell transparent. Xylenes are produced by the methylation of toluene and benzene. [3] [7] Commercial or laboratory-grade xylene produced usually contains about 40–65% of m-xylene and up to 20% each of o-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene. [8] [9] [10] The ratio of isomers can be shifted to favor the highly valued p-xylene via the patented UOP- Isomar process [11] or by transalkylation of xylene with itself or trimethylbenzene. These conversions are catalyzed by zeolites. [3]Wipe the brush with kitchen roll or old cloth and fill a container with the solvent – a jam jar is fine for smaller brushes, but it’s worth investing in a paint kettle for rollers If you work with solvents or thinners regularly, you are probably familiar with the safety precautions, but nevertheless The HSE Guide to working with solvents is useful resource. This aggressive solvent is ideal for cleaning. Don't be tempted to use it as a paint thinner unless you're looking for the "rippled finish" effect! Cellulose Thinners (Standard) You can use turpentine substitute for general cleaning, but we do not recommend it for paint thinning. This is as it may adversely affect drying times.
