About this deal

Her charm is reflected near the end of the book where she says, " Well, I am finished with this book, but I am not finished with my life or with my passion for campaign finance reform.

A ninety-year-old activist from New Hampshire chronicles her fourteen-month walk from Los Angeles to Washington, D. Haddock's walk across the country followed a southern route and took more than a year to complete, starting on January 1, 1999, in southern California and ending in Washington, D. But it's also just about the people who helped her along the way, some of her past history (this wasn't her first foray into activism), and finally just the toll of the walk itself. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She would temporarily miss the immediate affection of her family, but the attraction of being with her Heavenly Father was the greatest affection of her heart. Haddock achieved national fame when, between the ages of 88 and 90, starting on January 1, 1999, and culminating on February 29, 2000, she walked over 3,200 miles (5,100 km) across the continental United States to advocate for campaign finance reform. On August 19, 2004, Haddock's request was officially granted by Judge John Maher during a hearing at the Cheshire County probate court. In 1999, she undertook an audacious 3,200-mile walk across the United States for campaign finance reform. She attended Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts, for three years before marrying James Haddock. I was impressed by Granny D's grace in dealing with the people she met during her walk, including those who wanted to walk along. She worked during the Great Depression and was employed for twenty years as an executive secretary in the offices of the BeeBee Shoe factory in Manchester, New Hampshire. After the first efforts of Senators John McCain and Russ Feingold to regulate campaign finances through eliminating soft money failed in 1995, Granny D became increasingly interested in campaign finance reform and spearheaded a petition movement. Earthly relationships sought to beat, bruise and break her externally and internally, but she fought through the pain, bitterness and brokenness only to come forth as a faithful follower of Christ. These include Granny D: Walking Across America in My Ninetieth Year (Villard, 2001), Granny D: You're Never Too Old to Raise a Little Hell (Villard, 2003), and Granny D's American Century (University Press of New England, 2012). As a young man it was good to listen her stories and weep with her over the weary road, and learn how she came through scarred yet stronger.

She loved the Word, studying with her friends, and talking about its truth with all who would listen. Regardless of your politial persuasion, I think you'll find Granny D's book a fun and inspiring read. Shortly after that we were asked to include soul food and bar-b-q plates to our menu and we were off!Granny D lived in the next town over from me, and though I never met her, I feel like I did from reading her words.
