About this deal

This symbol means you must roll an additional chapter die for each member of the crew and add them to the row. Players can now choose to perform a flank attack once per chapter - of which there are usually thirteen in a single playthrough - that happens prior to the other players’ next turn and can deal additional damage if successfully pulled off. Then, flip the activate drone card to its drone recharging side—it cannot be used again this chapter.

Next round you will get to act in a bonus FLANK Round, taking the enemy by surprise and potentially dealing extra damage. The second game in the Escape the Dark series, Sector is a simple, sci-fi adventure game with a focus on atmosphere and player cooperation. When taking any of the following actions, you are not targeted by enemy attacks – your crewmates are keeping the enemy busy! Whenever you find a ranged weapon it comes fully loaded with ammo and you must immediately take the number and type of ammo dice shown and place them on the card.Items in a crewmember’s inventory can be used by them at any time, unless the item card itself indicates otherwise. From an aesthetic point of view there are definitely many things to like about Escape the Dark Sector, especially the evocative artwork penned by Alex Crispin which in my eyes is the undisputable pièce de résistance of this particular Themeborne production. Like me, you might enjoy the apparent nods to various sci-fi franchises, nestled in the game’s artwork. In addition to declaring that your crewmember will take the activate drone action and placing your crew die on the drone card, you must now also declare whether you intend to activate the Basic or the Advanced function of the drone.

Combined with the other two expansions it certainly adds a lot of varied content and massively expands on the core offering with meaningful player choice which was an issue with the core game. But the inclusion of ranged combat makes encounters with enemies feel much more engaging because the players have to discuss strategy beyond just who is going to rest and who is going to attack. If what has been rolled on a crewmember’s die matches any of the chapter dice laid out beneath the chapter card, that crewmember has hit and inflicted a wound. The game now features a system that separates the chapter cards into three distinct acts, which work together to tell an overarching narrative of the player characters escaping a space prison. I certainly have no plans to play it again for a good long while, as the game does get monotonous after multiple playthroughs in close succession. Having players face off against harder foes and traps the closer they get to the final boss makes things feel much more climactic, and is far better than the previous game’s habit of unceremoniously dumping its players into the last card. You wake supine on a cold floor with memories of pain etched into your mind and bruises painting your body.

The cards range from combat with broken droids, navigating ventilation ducts, escaping trash compactors, dueling teleporting assassins, navigating through alien egg laid corridors, and escaping bounty hunters. Playing as the beleaguered crew of an impounded star ship, the players find themselves confined to the detention block of a vast space station. There's usually a group choice, a combat, or an event that occurs to the player who turns over the card. The rules of the game are quite simple, but we do recommend you read this rule book in full before your first game, even if you have played another game in the Escape the Dark series before - there are plenty of differences. This is important because each player will have to roll their die to resolve checks in various encounters. The hit chart for this enemy shows that one ballistic hit will inflict one wound, allowing a player to remove one chapter die of their choice. Also add the MUTATION cards to the item deck, place the MUTATION die with the chapter dice from the core set, and set aside the rules reference card.

Ranged combat has players rolling ammo dice instead of their usual crew dice, with any hits resulting in increased or reduced damage depending on whether their enemy has any specific weaknesses. Similar to games like Arkham Noir or The Lost Expedition, the obstacles that Escape the Dark Sector presents to the player are resolved by performing skill checks relating to character traits of which there are three: might, cunning and wisdom. The straight-forward dice mechanics, combined with the rules details on the mission cards and limited character actions means that you can focus on the action and emerging story. The second game in the Escape the Dark series, Escape the Dark Sector is a simple, sci-fi adventure game with a focus on atmosphere, storytelling and player cooperation. The Basic function of each drone has a fixed outcome, but the Advanced function requires you to roll the TECH DIE to determine the outcome – and be warned, these drones are known to malfunction and the results are not always positive! Strategizing who draws each card is a good idea because the player who draws the card usually takes the most damage.
